Reading 2100 Steams to Life

A Big Moment: Reading 2100 Steams to Life in April 2025

In early April 2025, Reading T-1 No. 2100 reached a milestone decades in the making when she was fired up and successfully tested under steam for the first time in many years. Debuting as American Freedom Train No. 250, the locomotive’s steam test on April 3–4 marked a major step forward in the restoration effort and energized everyone involved in the project.

The steam tests covered critical systems like the boiler, piping, and water delivery—everything that has to work together for a locomotive to handle steam safely and reliably. RDG Steam Services was on site throughout the process to provide hands-on support, troubleshoot last-minute issues, and help make sure everything went as smoothly as possible. Having experienced contractors right there alongside volunteers and staff meant that tests could move forward with confidence and precision.

“This was a phenomenal milestone for the project,” said leaders of the restoration team, noting that the successful steam tests are both a technical achievement and a morale boost after years of dedicated work.

Seeing steam rise from No. 250’s stack again wasn’t just about hitting a project goal— it was a tangible reminder of what’s possible when volunteers, professionals, and supporters come together around a shared passion. As the restoration continues toward final assembly, running gear, and break-in work, this debut under steam stands as one of the most exciting chapters yet in returning an American classic to life on the rails.
