New Milestone: RDG Steam Services Completes Oil Pan for Reading 2100

We’re excited to share another big step forward in the restoration of Reading T-1 No. 2100, soon to carry the patriotic colors as American Freedom Train No. 250. RDG Steam Services recently completed the construction and installation of the locomotive’s oil pan, a critical component of its newly designed oil-burning system.

The oil pan forms the base of the firebox where the oil fuel is burned, and building it to fit the distinctive Wootten firebox of a T-1 was a precision task. With this assembly finished, the project team has what’s needed to support reliable, efficient oil firing in place of the original coal-burning setup—an important milestone in the locomotive’s rebirth.

Why Oil?

The decision to convert No. 2100 to burn recycled oil instead of coal was not made lightly. Historically, T-1s burned coal, but operating a coal burner today presents several challenges. Proper coal storage, handling, ash disposal, and the logistics of consistent supply can be costly and labor intensive, especially for excursions away from long-established coal facilities. Switching to oil simplifies refueling and reduces operational complexity, making it easier for hosting railroads to schedule and accommodate steam operations. It also helps cut down on emissions compared with traditional coal firing—important for both environmental and practical reasons on modern excursion trains.

With the oil pan now complete and installed, the restoration team can continue advancing the firebox and burner installation, bringing No. 2100 / AFT #250 ever closer to full steam. Every fabricated part and completed weld reflects the skill, patience, and passion that go into returning a giant of steam back to life.

Stay tuned for more updates as this incredible locomotive progresses toward its next big milestone!
